Lucifer’s Tom Ellis sets up new Netflix show (and it’s not at all what we expected)

Tom Ellis is making a big return to Netflix, but unfortunately for Lucifer fans, it’s not as everybody’s favorite devil. No, there won’t be more of the fan-favorite series in the future, but the actor who brought the dashing devil will soon be back on your watch list.

Netflix continues to lead the way in terms of entertainment innovation. In April 2022, the streamer announced that the card game Exploding Kittens will be adapted into an animated series and a new mobile game. The move for a series and game is a first for Netflix.

While Ellis won’t be returning to his role as the devil in Lucifer, the new animated series ironically has a little something to do with devil. Exploding Kittens will center on God and the Devil being sent to Earth in the form of house cats, furthering their conflict.

As if the erstwhile Lucifer Morningstar’s involvement in the upcoming animated series, which is set to be released next year on Netflix, isn’t enough, the series comes from comedy favorites Mike Judge (King of the Hill) and Greg Daniels (The Office).

Tom Ellis joins Exploding Kittens cast

On April 18, Netflix announced the upcoming animated series Exploding Kittens along with its voice cast. Joining Lucifer star Tom Ellis are Abraham Lim, Lucy Liu, Ally Maki, Mark Proksch, and Sasheer Zamata. Surely, more familiar voices will join the cast, too.

Exploding Kittens sounds like an exciting next step for Netflix, which has made a name for itself in the genre of adult animation. Shows like BoJack Horseman, Big Mouth and its spin-off Human Resources, and F is for Family (among others) have been huge hits for Netflix.

We have no doubt that Lucifer fans will follow Tom Ellis wherever he goes, especially if he happens to be voicing a devil this time around rather than playing one to perfect. But wouldn’t it be funny if he provides the voice of God in Exploding Kittens? We’ll have to wait and see!
